A BRIEF HISTORY OF WEST JAVA AGRICULTURE

West Java has indeed been steeped in agriculture for centuries, with its rich volcanic soil and fertile plains providing an ideal environment for various crops

Archeological findings suggest early rice cultivation in West Java dating back to around 2000 BC. Various indigenous groups Practiced diverse Agricultural including Shifting cultivation, and the cultivation of Tubers, Rice, Fruits, and Vegetables.

Pre-Colonial Era

Dutch Colonial Period

The Dutch Introduced a system of cultivation (cultuurstel) for local farmers to grow cash crops like Coffee, Sugar cane, and Indigo for Export. The Dutch also constructed irrigation system and roads which improved Agricultural Productivity and facilitated the transportation of goods.

Post-Independence Era, to Date

West Java Remains a Major Agricultural producer: it is a leading producer of Rice, Tea, Coffee, Vegetables and Fruits in Indonesia. Technological Innovations are being adopted to Improve more Efficiency, Sustainability and Competitiveness
